How to read a slot paytable before your first spin
Identify winning combinations, payout units and feature rules so you know what the slot is charging and displaying.

Open the game's information or help panel before the first spin. You want to establish three things: what a spin costs, what qualifies as a win, and what the paytable's numbers multiply. Similar-looking games can answer those questions differently.
Check the currency first. An amount shown in entertainment coins is not interchangeable with the same number in Sweeps Coins.
Find the total stake and payout unit
A game may show a coin value, a stake per line and a total stake. Use the total amount deducted for the spin when deciding whether it fits your limit. Check separately for an extra feature or jackpot contribution.
For an illustrative line game, 20 active lines at 0.01 SC per line cost 0.20 SC per spin. If a winning line pays 20 times the line stake, that line returns 0.20 SC. If a different game defines the same multiplier against the total stake, the result would be different. The paytable must tell you which basis applies.
Also check whether a payout table updates when you change the stake or displays fixed multipliers. A number followed by "x" needs a defined base amount.
Identify the winning pattern

These labels are starting points. Read the actual directions: left-to-right rules, a required first reel, diagonal adjacency or special exceptions can change which pattern qualifies.
Wild symbols do not necessarily substitute for every other symbol. Check exclusions for scatters, bonus symbols and jackpots. An attractive group of symbols is not automatically a win if it does not meet the stated pattern.
Read feature rules separately
Find what triggers free spins or another feature, how many rounds are awarded and whether retriggers exist. A feature may change multipliers, symbol behavior or the number of reels. Check whether the game offers a paid feature purchase and what that purchase actually guarantees.
Maximum-win figures are ceilings under specified rules, not expected prizes. If the game states that a cap ends a feature early, include that in your understanding of the display. Different versions of a game can also have different configured return percentages; use the information shown in the version you opened.

Distinguish a displayed win from a net gain
Suppose a spin costs 1 SC and displays a 0.40 SC win. That is a 0.40 SC return from a 1 SC stake, leaving a net change of minus 0.60 SC for that spin. Sound effects and a win animation do not change that arithmetic.
